The Campus Activities Board (CAB) is responsible for planning and
promoting many of the extracurricular programs on campus. These events include dances, concerts,
lectures, comedy shows, and novelty programs.
Members of CAB attend leadership conferences and talent showcase
conventions in order to plan a diverse activities calendar. CAB membership is open to any and all
interested students. Information is
available in the Student Government Office located on the second floor of the
Student Union.
The Christian Club is an organization designed to create a
non-denominational outreach for Christian fellowship on the LCC campus. Meetings provide an opportunity for students
to share devotions and plan activities in a Christian atmosphere.
The Graphic Design Club’s main goals are to provide supplementary
education in the areas of design, illustration, and graphic arts. The Club sponsors field trips, workshops, and
seminars with professionals in the field.
These activities are provided for by various fund-raising projects
initiated by Club members.
The Music Club is made up of all interested students
who are actively involved in music. It
provides members with the opportunity to attend cultural events, conventions,
and seminars, and to participate in music workshops. The Club’s goal is to learn more about music
and to promote musical activities.
Members also have the opportunity to be student members of Musical
Education National Conference (MENC) and Kansas Music Education Association
(KMEA).
Phi Beta
Lambda (PBL) is the college division of Future Business Leaders of
America. PBL helps members
bridge the gap between the classroom and the business world by giving
them an opportunity to learn first-hand about the business community. Goals include strengthening the confidence of
students, developing competent, assertive business leadership, creating more
interest in and understanding of American business enterprise, developing
character, encouraging scholarship, and facilitating the transition from school
to work.
Phi Theta Kappa
(PTK) is the international honor society for two-year colleges. PTK has sought to recognize and encourage
scholarship and leadership among associate degree students since it was founded
in 1918. Phi Theta Kappa membership is
conferred by invitation only. To be
considered, a student must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at
Labette Community College, have established a grade point average of 3.5 or
better, have established a record of academic excellence as judged by the
faculty, be of good moral character, and possess recognized qualities of
citizenship. Members are eligible to
apply for transfer scholarships that are awarded to Society members only, are
automatically nominated for inclusion in the National Dean’s List, and realize
other lifetime benefits of membership in the Society.
The Respiratory Therapy Club is designed to bring together diverse
students involved in the Respiratory Therapy Program and to promote the
profession. Members are involved in
service, social, professional, and educational activities.
The Student Government
Association (SGA) has as its primary role and function the responsibility
of serving the students of LCC by providing a voice among all students of the
institution. The SGA is comprised of
four executive board officers who are voted on by the students, at least five
senators who are also elected by the students, and organization
representatives, who are appointed by the active clubs on campus. The organization listens to the students and
voices concerns to the administration, devises and implements a student
discount program with area merchants, and organizes leadership workshops for
area organizations. Interested students
should contact the SGA office located on the second floor of the Student Union
for more information on how to become involved.
The purpose of the LCC Student Nurses Organization is to create the
opportunity for individual responsibility and leadership. The primary aim is to prepare students for
membership and participation in professional nursing organizations. Student nurse input into the governance of
the Nursing Department is encouraged through student representation at monthly
meetings of the Nurse Faculty Organization.
The intercollegiate athletics program and its students are important
components to the overall image and activities of the College. The College has women’s and men’s basketball,
baseball, softball, volleyball, and wrestling.
In addition, a co-ed cheerleading/spirit squad entertains Cardinal
fans. LCC is a member of the National
Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), and belongs to the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC). The KJCCC is widely recognized as one of the
most competitive in the nation.
Cardinal athletics continues to produce student
athletes who go on to succeed at the academic four-year level and several at
the professional level. Historically, Cardinal
athletics has been noted for its nationally known wrestling program. It has produced scores of all-Americans,
including several academic all-Americans---and a Hall of Fame coach who is the
current athletic director. Baseball and
basketball also have a record of their athletes successfully moving to the next
level. Volleyball has recently been
restarted and has a promising future.
Softball, although new to Cardinal athletics, has been a solid performer
from the start. Not only are the
Cardinals competitive on the field, but their GPAs demonstrate
that coaches demand that athletes also take their academic futures seriously.
The Dean of Student Services prepares an Equity in Athletics report
every year that provides statistics and other specific information on budgets,
scholarship money, etc. The report,
along with graduation and transfer rates for athletes, is available from the
Dean of Student Services.
