RC 5189

Care Planning for Common Respiratory Diseases

1 Credit Hour

Prerequisite:

5806 Respiratory Disease or Pathophysiology

This elective is intended to help respiratory therapy students prepare for the clinical simulation examination; one of the examinations needed to become a registered respiratory therapist. In addition, this course will strengthen knowledge of respiratory diseases needed for clinical practice. Students will be creating respiratory care plans for specific disease processes.

Clinical Practice Internship

1-3 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

Clinical Practice I, II, and III, Fundamentals of Respiratory Care I, II, and III, Advanced Mechanical Ventilators, Pediatric Respiratory Care, and Topics and Procedures I and II

This is a supplemental clinical course intended to enhance clinical proficiency and better prepare graduates for the work environment. Students will be scheduled to rotate through areas of their specific interest. Each credit hour will equate to 64 clock hours of clinical time.

Respiratory Care Pharmacology

3 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

Admission into program

This course addresses general principles of pharmacology with emphasis on drugs affecting the cardiopulmonary system.  An overview of antibiotics, narcotics, and sedatives is presented.

Introduction to Respiratory Care

3 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

Admission into program

This is an introductory course that covers basic concepts of Respiratory Care.

 

RC 5252

Respiratory Care Topics and Procedures

3 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

RC  5258  Clinical Practice II, RC  5806  Respiratory Diseases, RC  5802  Cardiopulmonary Anatomy and Physiology, and RC  5803  Fundamentals of Respiratory Care II

In this course, the student will prepare for the care of the critically and acutely ill patient and includes electrocardiograms, artificial airway care, and resuscitation techniques.

 

RC 5254

Respiratory Care Topics and Procedures II

2 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

RC  5805  Fundamentals of Respiratory Care II and RC  5252  Respiratory Care Topics and Procedures I

This is a course designed to prepare the student for specialized monitoring used by respiratory therapists and includes:  invasive hemodynamic monitoring, ventilatory graphic waveforms, intracranial pressure monitoring, bronchoscopies, thoracentesis chest tubes, sleep studies, pulmonary rehabilitation, xrays, metabolic cart, and others.

Clinical Practice I

Admission into program

The respiratory care student will apply skills learned in the classroom to the clinical setting.  Emphasis is placed on basic therapeutic modalities, charting, and assessment skills.

Clinical Practice II

4 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

RC  5255  Clinical Practice I, RC  5251  Introduction to Respiratory Care, RC  5800  Fundamentals of Respiratory Care I, and RC  5250  Respiratory Care Pharmacology

Students will apply skills learned in the classroom to the clinical setting.  Emphasis is placed on basic therapeutic modalities, charting, and assessment skills.

Clinical Practice IV

5 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

RC  5813  Clinical Practice III, RC  5254  Respiratory Care Topics and Procedures II, and RC  5809  Pediatric Respiratory Care

Students will apply skills learned in the classroom to the clinical setting.  Emphasis is placed on critical care and advanced patient monitoring and assessment.

 

RC 5283

Respiratory Care Seminar

1 Credit Hour

Prerequisite:

None

This course will cover various topics related to the respiratory care profession.

 

RC 5800

Fundamentals of Respiratory Care I

4 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

Admission into program

This course provides instruction in basic gas physics and respiratory care modalities such as medical gas, humidity and aerosol, hyperinflation and bronchial hygiene therapy.  This course includes a laboratory.

 

RC 5802

Cardiopulmonary Anatomy and Physiology

3 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

BI  0412  Anatomy and Physiology, RC  5800  Fundamentals of Respiratory Care I, RC  5251  Introduction to Respiratory Care, and RC  5250  Respiratory Care Pharmacology

An in-depth study of cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology will be presented; included is a unit on renal physiology and acid-base balance.

 

RC 5803

Fundamentals of Respiratory Care II

4 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

RC  5800  Fundamentals of Respiratory Care I, RC  5250  Respiratory Care Pharmacology, RC  5255  Clinical Practice I, and RC  5251  Introduction to Respiratory Care

This course will continue from RC  5800  Fundamentals of Respiratory Care I and will incorporate diagnostic procedures such as arterial blood gases and pulmonary function.  This course includes a laboratory.

 

RC 5805

Fundamentals of Respiratory Care III

4 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

RC  5802  Cardiopulmonary Anatomy and Physiology I, RC  5258  Clinical Practice II, RC  5803  Fundamentals of Respiratory Care II, and RC  5806  Respiratory Diseases

This course includes an in-depth study of mechanical ventilation for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients.  This course includes a laboratory.

Respiratory Diseases

3 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

RC  5255  Clinical Practice I, RC  5800  Fundamentals of Respiratory Care I, RC  5250  Respiratory Care Pharmacology, and RC  5251  Introduction to Respiratory Care

This course provides the student with an in-depth study of diseases that affect the cardiopulmonary system.

Pediatric Respiratory Care

3 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

RC  5252  Respiratory Care Topics and Procedures I and RC  5805  Fundamentals of Respiratory Care III

This course will cover neonatal and pediatric respiratory care.  Includes neonatal and pediatric respiratory diseases and respiratory care modalities applied to the neonatal and pediatric patient.

 

RC 5810

Critical Care Medicine

4 Credit Hours

Prerequisite:

RC  5813  Clinical Practice III, RC  5809  Pediatric Respiratory Care, and RC  5254  Respiratory Care Topics and Procedures II

This course will cover topics in acute and critical care.  Emphasis is placed on application of data obtained during monitoring and assessment of patients.

Comprehensive Respiratory Care

None

Students will practice on information gathering and decision making skills for clinical situations in a controlled, classroom environment.

 

RC 5813

Clinical Practice III

RC  5258  Clinical Practice II, RC  5805  Fundamentals of Respiratory Care III, and RC  5252  Respiratory Care Topics and Procedures I

Math for Respiratory Care Practitioner

1 Credit Hour

None

This course addresses the many math concepts used by respiratory care practitioners.

 

RC 5817

Advanced Ventilators

1 Credit Hour

Prerequisite:

None

This laboratory course is a continuation of Fundamentals of Respiratory Care III and will allow students additional hands on practice with a variety of ventilators.

 

RC 5818

Medical Terminology for Respiratory Care

1 Credit Hour

Prerequisite:

None

This course presents a study of basic concepts and elements of medical terms, terms pertaining to the study of the body, word building, and pronunciation of basic medical terminology with emphasis on terms used by the respiratory care practitioner.  A programmed learning, word building approach is used to learn word parts for constructing and analyzing new terms.

 

RC 5820

Entry-Level Review

1 Credit Hour

Prerequisite:

None

Students will practice on information gathering and decision-making skills in a controlled classroom environment.  Students will work on test-taking skills specific to passing the NBRC entry-level exam.
