Four Semester Plan

Attention LCC Students!

This is your chance to win your choice of either a TI-84 Graphing Calculator or a $100 gift certificate to the LCC Bookstore!

Starting on Monday, April 21, we will post a daily question, on this page that will challenge your mathematical abilities. You will get a new question each day of the week, ending on Friday, April 25th.

Question of the Day, April 21:
Take a 2-digit number and reverse the digits. The difference between these numbers is always a multiple of the same number. State the number and show how to find it.

Question of the Day, April 22:
A mother and son took note of the fact that their ages are reversed numbers of each other (for example, age 48 vs. age 84). They thought about it and realized that it had happened 6 times including this year and might happen two more times before she dies. How old are the mother and son?

Question of the Day, April 23:
In a given family, each daughter has the same number of brothers and sisters. Each son has twice as many sisters as brothers. How many sons and daughters are there in the family?
Question of the Day, April 24:
Four campers must cross a stream. They must use a rowboat that can only hold two people. Each person can row across at different speeds. Bill can row across in 1 minute. Jane can row across in 2 minutes. Mike can row it in 5 minutes and Sally can row it in 10 minutes. One person must row back to pick up the next person. What is the fastest time possible for all four campers to cross the stream?
Question of the Day, April 25:
Get a pencil and paper and write this series of numbers down. 335 443 554_. So there are nine numbers, 335443554_, followed by a blank. What's the blank, and why?

The first student who emails Kim Miller at kimm@labette.edu with all five questions answered correctly will win either the calculator or the gift certificate.

This contest will close on Saturday, April 26 at 12:00pm. Any entries received after that time will not be considered.

Only students who are currently enrolled in a Spring 2008 LCC course are eligible to win. This includes all day courses, night courses, extension courses, online courses, concurrent courses and dual credit courses.

Answers may be submitted daily or all at once. The winner will be contacted by email on Monday, April 28th.

For more information, contact Kim Miller at kimm@labette.edu or
