Max Schiefelbusch

2003 Cardinal Citation Award Recipient

Max Schiefelbusch of Parsons was a teacher and coach in Parsons public schools for 15 years and an instructor at Parsons Junior College for 21 years. He received his bachelor’s degree from Pittsburg State Teachers College in 1941. From 1942 to 1945 he served in the United States Army, leaving as a master sergeant. He received his master’s degree from Pittsburg State in 1946.

He taught at Parsons West Junior High from 1945 to 1950 and at Parsons Senior High from 1950 to 1960. He began teaching social sciences at Parsons Junior College in 1960 and was chairman of the social science department for four years. He was sponsor of the college’s Pep Club, Democratic Club, and Foreign Students Club. He retired in 1981.

He worked at the Parsons post office for ten years during Christmas holidays and he was manager of the Parsons municipal swimming pool for 13 years. He served on the board of directors of the YMCA in Parsons and held various positions with the Boy Scouts. He was president of the local teacher’s association, vice president of the Kansas State Teacher’s Association Convention and vice president of the Kansas State Community College Teacher’s Association.

He is a past member of the Parsons Rotary Club. He served four years each on the Parsons Human Relations Commission and the Parsons Planning Commission. He was campaign manager for Bill Dearth’s races for the Kansas state senate in 1970 and 1974. He received the Elks’ Distinguished Citizen Award in 1989.

His interests include politics, basketball, golf, and community affairs. He and his wife, Nina, have been married 60 years. They had two children: Max, who is deceased, and Anne, who is Mrs. Keith Maloney.
