Brotherton Named Labette Community College Cardinal Citee Award Winner
P. Michael Brotherton has
been named the 2009 Cardinal Citation Award winner by the Labette Community
College Alumni Association and LCC. This is the highest honor that is
bestowed to an individual for lifetime achievement by LCC.
The Cardinal Citation Award is presented annually at Commencement. The criteria are: the nominee must be a living person who has had significant lifetime achievements to his or her profession, community, state, or nation; the nominee must have a current or past association with Labette Community College; and the nominee does not have to be a graduate of LCC.
Each year LCC and the LCC Alumni Association recognize an individual for a lifetime of outstanding service to their community and/or to the college. A distinguished panel of community members review nominations and recommend a Citee. The Citee is honored the evening of Commencement during a reception for all former Citees, their families, invited guests, and the public. The Citee is presented a plaque and is a speaker at Commencement. The Citee's framed portrait is hung in the Gallery of Cardinal Citation Recipients in the college's main administration building.
Brotherton graduated from Risco High School in Missouri in 1971 and from the College of the School of the Ozarks, Pt. Lookout, Missouri in 1975. He received a Masters of Arts degree from Pittsburg State University in 1977.
Brotherton began teaching in the English Department at Labette Community College in 1976; he retired in December 2006, having taught 30 years. During his tenure at Labette, he worked on many college-related projects. He coordinated the restoration of the LCC Art Collection (a project nominated for the Governor’s Arts Awards) and the renovation of Hendershot Gallery. With other members of the English Department, he worked to establish the first college-wide placement testing program on campus, and he served on “The Team,” a group of faculty members who pioneered online education at Labette.
For a three year period, Brotherton served as Chairman of the Humanities Division at the college, and he was a member of the Faculty Senate for over ten years, three times serving as President of the LCC Faculty Association. In addition to his professional duties, he was active in college theatre productions, organized numerous special exhibits in Hendershot Gallery, and instituted the ZaSu Pitts Film Festival.
In 1997, he was named “Teacher of the Year” by the Parsons Chamber of Commerce. In 1998, he received the NISOD (National Institute for Staff & Organizational Development) Excellence Award. In 2003, Brotherton received the SIDLIT (Summer Institute on Distance Learning) “Colleague to Colleague” Award for the Outstanding Online Class in Kansas. In 2005, KNEA/Uniserve Southeast presented him its “Advocate” Award for his contributions to KNEA.
Brotherton has served as President of the Parsons Arts & Crafts Fair and as a board member of the Parsons Humane Society. For five years, he co-managed the Humane Society Thrift Store.
Presently, Brotherton is serving on the Parsons Arts & Humanities Council--where he is coordinating the Council’s Carnegie Centennial Celebration-- and the Board of Directors of the Parsons Historical Society Museum. He is also an active member of Operation Bright Touch and the LCC Gallery Committee.
In 2008, he co-authored (with David Mattox) Images of America: Parsons.
Brotherton will be honored at The Cardinal Citee Reception prior to commencement on Friday, May 15 at 5:30 p.m. in the Carnegie Arts Center. The public is invited to attend.
