What are the advantages of online courses?
The major advantage of an online course is convenience. In online courses, a student can
work at times convenient to them - whether at 3 p.m. or 2 a.m. -
instead of specific times designated by the College. Also, some
students respond more favorably to this type of instruction, which
typically relies heavily on reading, writing, and interaction.
What kind of computer software and equipment do I need to take an online course?
In terms of software, the online courses at LCC can be viewed with any Web browser.
Netscape Navigator, version 3.0 or higher, or Microsoft Internet
Explorer, versions 6.0 or higher are recommended. Students may use
a Web browser other than those recommended, but with other
browsers, graphics displays, the ability to attach files, and
other features may not be available. There is also a Java download
required. It is available via Blackboard.
In terms of hardware, a computer with Internet access is a minimum requirement. If you
access the Internet through a dial-up connection, the very minimum speed is 28.8, but it is strongly suggested that you
use 56.6 or better.

How much time does online coursework take?
Generally, online courses take the same amount of time or more than traditional
ones. The difference is convenience. Online instructors estimate
that in a typical 16-week semester course, a student will spend
between two and three hours a week for each credit hour. For
instance, if a student is enrolled during the fall or spring
semester in a three-credit-hour online course, expect to spend six
to nine hours per week working on coursework. For shorter courses,
such as a summer course, he or she will spend more hours per week
on the class work, but the course won't last as many weeks.
How do I register for an online course?
Currently, LCC does not have online enrollment. However, after
being admitted to the College and making arrangements to pay
tuition, a student may…

What happens after enrollment?
Students
must email their instructors prior to the first day of class to
get their password. The password allows the student access to the
course and course materials. Some instructors may send out
introductory materials prior to the class, or they may schedule
an orientation session. If a student cannot attend a
scheduled orientation session, he or she must contact the
instructor before the session.

Do I ever have to come on campus when I take an online course?
A few courses will require a limited number of campus visits. However, in most cases,
if a student cannot come to campus, alternative arrangements can
be made. The student must contact the instructor if coming to
campus is a problem.
How much do the courses cost?
Tuition and fees for college courses at LCC are as follows:
- In-state tuition and fees: $71. Online
and Video courses also have an additional fee of $15 per credit
hour
- Border state tuition and fees: $92 per
credit hour (MO, AR, OK)
- Out-of-State tuition and fees: $96 per
credit hour
Do I need a textbook or other course materials?
It depends on the course. Most courses will require the purchase of a textbook.
These books are available in the LCC Bookstore located in the
Student Union (on the Parsons Campus) or you can order online
through our eCampus link on the main LCC web page. In addition,
several times each year, the
bookstore also sells books at LCC extension sites throughout
Labette and Cherokee Counties.

When can I access course materials?
The syllabus is typically the only course material available without a password.
After enrolling, a password will be provided; with this password
the student can access the rest of the materials.
Can I take this class without access to a computer?
No. Since interaction with the instructor and with other students is a major portion of
LCC's online courses and since that interaction occurs online, a
student must have access to a computer with Internet capability to
participate in an online class through the College. If a student
does not own a computer, three computer labs with Internet
connections are available on campus. The computer labs are
generally open during regular College hours.
Will the course transfer?
Courses taken online transfer to four-year institutions the same as courses taken on
campus. Generally, courses in Associate in Arts and Associate in
Science degree programs transfer. If a student has questions about
the transferability of a specific course, he or she should contact
the Admissions Office or the instructor.
Course participation If
you log into your online course, that is the same as attending a
class session, even if you don't submit any work. To drop an online
course and receive a full refund, you must drop during the first
week of class.
