Michael
W. Carter, PA-C., St.
Paul, has been named to receive the 2005 William and Allene
Guthrie Van Meter Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award from the
board of directors of the Labette Community College Foundation
and Alumni Association. The award will be presented November 4
at the eighth annual Donor Appreciation Luncheon at the Carnegie
Arts Center in Parsons. The luncheon will not only honor Carter,
but will also give thanks to all persons who donated to the LCC
Foundation in the past year. Music will be provided by the LCC
Music Department and scholarship recipients will speak to the
audience.
Carter
is a Physician's Assistant at Labette County Medical Center's
St. Paul Clinic providing health care services to area
residents.
He
graduated from Labette Community College in 1991 with an
Associate of Applied Science degree in Respiratory Care. He
received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Pittsburg State
University with certification in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
in 1993, and a Bachelor of Science, Physician Assistant degree
from Wichita State University in 1996.
He
worked as a Respiratory Therapy Technician at Neosho Memorial
Regional Medical Center from 1990-1991 and as a Registered
Respiratory Therapist at Hospital District #1 in Girard from
1991-1994. He is a
member of the American Association of Physician Assistants and
the Kansas Association of Physician Assistants.
Carter
is heavily involved in his community. He is the Vice
President/Treasurer of the Prairie Mission Retirement Center
Board of Directors, Vice President of Waterfowl USA, 4th
Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of Ducks
Unlimited, and a former board member of the St. Francis Parish
Church Council. He also volunteers for the St. Paul School
Athletic Programs by providing physicals and medical support to
the student athletes.
Carter
and his wife Coleen have three children: Kayla, age 20; Kelsey,
age 18; and Kolby, age 13.
The
William and Allene Guthrie Van Meter Outstanding Alumni
Achievement Award is the highest award given to a LCC graduate.
The award is in memory and appreciation of the Van Meters for
their generous estate gift that funded renovation of Thiebaud
Theatre at Labette Community College. William was a 1929
graduate of the college, then named Parsons Junior College, and
Allene taught romance languages at the college from 1929 to
1935.
