Community Services & Workforce Education

 

Labette Community College is vital in the role of high= er education for traditional and non-traditional age students, whether those students are taking a few general education courses before transferring or = they are graduating from LCC. What many forget about is the imperative piece of workforce education, training or re-training businesses and employees to ke= ep current on technology, workplace wellness, human resources, and much more. =

MiChielle Cooper, Director of Workforce Education and Community Services works tirelessly with business and industries in this community listening to the needs of those companies, and in-turn arranging customized training and courses for their employees to best suit the needs = of the company.

What does workforce education mean to this community? = More employable employees, employees that are better versed in their positions, = and more opportunities for employers to have a well-trained staff.

After creating a very diverse Workforce Advisory counc= il with many local business and industry professionals, listening and collaborating on meeting the needs of those businesses, creation of special= ized workforce courses we= re established. Like the beginning computer courses, QuickBooks for small businesses, workplace wellness, customer service and human resources, supervisory practices, employment and basic life skills training, and many other essential and relevant courses to the operations of any business, lar= ge or small. MiChielle, along with the advisory board, revised the curriculum = for an entrepreneurship certificate program, human resources professional development programs, and a construction certificate program. The Workforce department has also teamed up with the City of Parsons Economic development= to offer the Foundations of Small Business class in which students completing = that class had an opportunity to create a business plan to be judged for a chanc= e at winning free rent for a year in a downtown business space. LCC Workforce and Downtown Parsons, Inc. received the Business Development Excellence award f= or this endeavor in which of the course completers, three new businesses start= ed in Labette County.

MiChielle, with the coordination of talented instructo= rs, has been offering courses for personal enrichment as well like interior des= ign, jewelry and beading, beginning computer, gardening, meditation for relaxati= on, and Tai Chi for Arthritis.
