LCC GED Program Offered in Baxter

Labette Community College will partner with the Bill Abernathy Lifelong Learning Center to offer area residents a chance to further their education.

According to Gwen Morgan, LCC Adult Education Director, “It is a great pleasure to be able to collaborate with the progressive education alternatives offered through The Bill Abernathy Lifelong Learning Center.”  Through this partnership the LCC Adult Education Program will help adults prepare for the GED examination and earn a high school diploma.

Instruction will be offered in Baxter Springs beginning May 12th  from 6:00 p.m.—9:00 p.m.  Students must pre-enroll by calling 1-888-LABETTE Ext. 1147.

To be eligible for services participants must be 16 years or older and provide a photo identification.  Parents must provide a high school disclaimer for those under the age of 18 and accompany the student to pre enroll in classes.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau Quick Facts for 2000, 20 percent of the citizens in Cherokee County who are 25 years or over do not have a high school diploma. In other words, approximately 4,521 Cherokee County residents lack their high school diploma. Statewide approximately 7,000 young Kansans exit the public school system yearly.

With this partnership, adults in the Baxter Springs area who were unable to finish their high school education no longer need to face the stigma of the past.  When students study and complete testing requirements for their GED they are now receiving a Kansas High School Diploma.  There is no longer a difference in wording on the certification.
