GED Graduation Ceremony Set
Every year, the Labette Community College Adult Education Program honors the individuals who successfully completed the GED test and received their Kansas State High School Diploma from the Kansas Board of Regents. To honor those students, the LCC Adult Education program will hold its 2008 GED Graduation Ceremony Thursday, May 8 at 7:00 p.m. The graduation ceremony will be held at the Parsons Municipal Auditorium.
There will be a special presentation by the Labette Conservation Correctional Camp Honor Guard. State Representative Rich Prohel will be a guest speaker and GED Graduate speakers will be Roxanne Powell and Mario Campbell. Vice President of Academic Affairs, Joe Burke and his wife Jamie will provide music for the ceremony. A public reception will follow the ceremony in the basement of the Parsons Municipal Auditorium.
“Since July 1, 2007 until May 1, 2008 there have been 296 GED tests taken at the Regional Testing Sites. This GED Graduation will be held to celebrate with graduates representing the 246 who passed all five of the tests to be eligible to receive their Kansas State High School Diploma this year,” said LCC Adult Education Director, Gwen Morgan.
Each year the Adult Education Program serves approximately 400 citizens from the Labette and Cherokee counties at a cost per participant lower than the state average for the 31 Adult Education Programs in the State of Kansas.
“We are very proud that the Adult Education Program at Labette Community College is able to provide this service to our communities to reinforce the educational needs for our workforce,” Morgan added.
Without the facility provisions of several partnerships, holding classes at various sites would not be possible. This year classes have been held at the Bill Abernathy Learning Center in Baxter Springs, Coffeyville Community College Technical Division at Columbus, Chetopa High School, Galena Head Start, Labette Conservation Correctional Camp in Oswego, and Labette Community College in Parsons. Students travel as far as 60 miles to receive the training necessary to complete the Kansas State High School Diploma at the GED Regional Testing Center in the LCC Student Success Center. Adult Education is provided through a federal, state, and local match of funds to promote basic academic skills needed for the workforce.
