Operation Excel Names Student of the Month
Operation Excel, a federally funded Student Support Services TRIO Grant at Labette Community College has named Kathryn Baldwin Student of the Month for December. Since 1990 this federal grant has helped over 3,000 students meet their educational goals.
Students of the Month must maintain at least a 2.7 GPA, and use OE services such as workshops, tutoring, and counseling/transferring support. Community service is also part of the selection criteria.
Baldwin, a sophomore majoring in Elementary Education and resident of Parsons, will graduate this month. She plans to transfer to Pittsburg State University and complete her education degree. Baldwin, a first generation college student, believes she would not be pursuing a degree without the financial aid, scholarships and Pell grant she received. She married and started a family, ran a daycare for six years, before starting back to school in fall 2005.
She loves learning and is eager to share that love with elementary students. The passion for teaching seems to run in her family. An aunt, two cousins, her grandmother and great-grandmother all have been teachers. She is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa.
