Student of the Month for February 2010

Student Support Services (SSS), of Labette Community College (LCC), announces the February Student of the Month, Terra Grimes.  Grimes, of Joplin, Mo., is an interactive graphic design major and looks to graduate  in the spring of 2011.

She is interested in transferring to a four-year institution but hasn’t made any decisions.  After completing her education, Grimes hopes to find a career in video editing.

Among her endeavors at LCC, Grimes is active in many student organizations on campus, such as Campus Activities Board, Graphic Design Club, and the honor society Phi Theta Kappa.

“Terra was diligent about giving donations for each service project for the fall semester,” co-advisor of Phi Theta Kappa, Tammy Fuentez, said.  “Through her involvement in the honor society, she was the first member to reach five-star status in our Enhanced Membership program.”

Grimes said many have helped her succeed in college but her mother was significant in her achievements.  She appreciates the help from her mother and step-father, instructors on campus, and the assistance through SSS.  Kelly Kirkpatrick, director of SSS, and Rikke Mitchell, advisor of SSS, were very helpful to Grimes with extra grant aid, counseling, and housing searches.

Student Support Services is a TRIO Program funded by the United States Department of Education to improve the persistence, transfer, and graduation rates of first-generation and income-eligible college students at LCC.  Student Support Services serves 215 students each year with an annual budget of $326,136. For more information about SSS, please contact Kelly Kirkpatrick, program director, at (620) 820-1147 or by e-mail at kellyk@labette.edu.
