LCC Offering Health and Wellness Courses through Community Service Department
This spring Labette Community College is offering several different Health and Wellness courses. The next two courses are Basic Concepts of Herbs and Beginning Meditation for Relaxation.
The Basic Concepts of Herbs course will begin March 23, 2010 and is a one credit hour course. This class will be Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. through April 20th. It is designed to cover basic herbal therapeutic actions, energetic properties, and historical uses of about 40 common herbs. Students will actually practice tasting plants to learn firsthand how different categories of herbs affect the body. Nine basic categories of herbs are discussed, using the four-element model, with examples of medicinal plants in each of the categories. You will understand the value of herbs in order to make more informed choices and use them more effectively in basic health care.
For nurses interested in taking this course, the “Individual Offering Approval Form for Continuing Nursing Education” is available through the Workforce Education office to send to the Kansas State Board of Nursing to determine eligibility for CEU credit. Other professionals would need to check with their respective governing boards.
The Beginning Meditation for Relaxation course begins March 25, 2010 and is a one credit hour course. The class will be Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at LCC’s Main campus. It is designed to offer a variety of stress reduction techniques, guided meditations, and breathing exercises to help you fight stress and listen to your body. The course will offer a repertoire of resources to promote health and wellness in the face of fatigue, illness, grief, and transition, which are common sources of stress.
Each session will include a twenty minute directed meditation, guided by the instructor, on a theme pertinent to daily life. Themes throughout the course include relaxing with each of the senses, enjoying nature, transcending stressful events and people, and body awareness.
