LCC Phi Theta Kappa Successful at Region Convention
Labette Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter attended the Region Convention in Salina, KS the weekend of March 5th - 7th. Eighteen student members and three co-advisors were in attendance. Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society of the two-year college. The local chapter did an outstanding job representing LCC. The student members participated in service projects, leadership sessions, and fellowship activities.
Members
started out in the first breakout session with service activities, such as
Operation Green. Each service committee consisting of students across Kansas
picked up litter around the conference site. In addition, each chapter in
Kansas brought a collection of pennies for the Pennies for Peace project
which benefits the Haiti relief fund through the American Red Cross. The
LCC chapter gave around $25 of pennies to the fund. During the first
general session, chapters were to introduce themselves through a chapter
chant. Marti Frazier, Tau Theta executive officer, used his musical
abilities to rewrite the Black-Eyed Peas song, “I’ve Got a Feeling.” The
chapter rapped their chant as the Kansas Region cheered for the unique
introduction.
On Saturday, students learned more about Phi Theta Kappa benefits, such as
transfer scholarships, scholarly awards, and alumni opportunities. Free
time included time at hotel pool, hot tube, and fitness center. The awards
banquet was formal dress Saturday night. Members and advisors gathered for
a nice dinner including sparkling cider. Many awards were given and the
night concluded with a dance.
