Results for LCC Science Fair
Labette Community College held a Science Fair on Friday, February 29. Students received a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place rating based on average points received by a panel of three judges. Trophies were awarded for “Outstanding Scientist” to the students earning the most points for areas of competition. If students tied or were within 0.5 points of each other, 2 or more trophies were awarded.
Trophies were also given for best “Artistic Display,” and “Outstanding Science Teachers.” Outstanding Science Teachers are determined by the quality of projects and points earned by the students competing. Judges voted for the project which demonstrated the best science research to determine “Outstanding Science Investigator.” Results were as follows:
First place High School Chemistry and Outstanding Scientist Chemistry to Milan Piva, Parsons High School. Outstanding Science Teacher went to LeAnne Burris and Paul Duroni also of Parsons High School.
In other competition: K-3 Paige Holgate, Holgate Academy, received a 3rd place rating and received Outstanding K-3 Scientist for Physics. Beth Holgate, Holgate Academy, was the Outstanding Elementary Science Teacher. Other participants were Gwyn Dean and Madison Sheddrick, from Neosho Heights Elementary in Oswego. Gwyn and Madison’s participation earned Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Prince of their schools an “Outstanding Science Teacher trophy” and prize. In 4th to 5th grade competition, Jayce Finley, Garfield Elementary, received a trophy for best “Artistic Display”.
47 of the 50 participants competed in the 6th-8th grade division. Earning 2nd place ratings in Physics were Shelby Carpenter, Abe Russell, and Katie Smith all of Meadow view; they also received trophies for Outstanding Scientist for Physics. Also receiving a 2nd place rating for physics was Kenzie Rea. 3rd place ratings for physics were Monica LaForge, Taylor Stice, Bailey Walters, Michael Ludwig, Zack Wade Frost, Ebony Rakestraw, Amanda Steeby, Levi Schoenhofer, Lorren Koger from Meadow view, and Matthew Volmer from St. Patrick’s. Michael Ludwig also received a trophy for best “Artistic Display.”
Also in the 6th-8th grade division, in the Computer Science category 3rd place ratings were earned by Nick Scott, Chelsee Penrod, and Chandler Clemons all from Meadow View. Nick Scott won the trophy for “Outstanding Scientist, Computer Science.” In the Chemistry division, Trent Walker from Meadow View and Paul Schibi from St. Patrick’s earned a 3rd place rating. Trent walker won the trophy for “Outstanding Scientist, Chemistry.” In the Biology category, a 1st place rating was earned by Lane Whitt from Meadow View, 2nd place ratings went to Bailey Price, Steven Collins, Libby Hizey, Allison Hudson, Patience Hosey, and Michaela O’Brien all from Meadow View. 3rd place ratings were awarded to William Webster, Bo Bryant, Kelsey Murdock, and Ashleigh Shields from Meadow View, and to David Krall from St. Patrick’s. The Outstanding Scientist trophies for Biology went to Lane Whitt, Bailey Price, and Steven Collins. The Outstanding Science Teacher for middle school went to Jeff Pegues of Meadow View. A final award was earned by Ashleigh Shields for best medical investigation. This award and prize was from the Labette Community College Respiratory Club.
Prizes for the teachers and students were made possible by the generous donations from area businesses, which includes TeamBank, Bank or Parsons, Bleacher Gear, Inc, Commercial Bank, Ducommun Aero Structures, Inc. , Eye Care Associates, Grand view Products Company, Inc., Timothy J. Grillot, Attorney at Law, McCarty’s Office Machines, Parsons Kiwanis Club, and Dr. Joe Wommack Dentistry. Door prizes were donated by the Labette Community College Radiography club, Dr. Dee Bohnenblust, and Dr. Mary Jaeger. The best “Artistic Display” awards were sponsored by the Labette Community College Student Ambassadors.
Next year, the LCC Science Fair will be a regional competition and winners will advance to the Kansas Science and Engineering Fair. At the state level, winners will earn a place in the international science competition.
