LCC Respiratory Care Celebrates Respiratory Care week

National Respiratory Care week was celebrated October 21-27. Each year the Labette Community College Respiratory Care department celebrates the week with various activities and information booths to help raise awareness about respiratory care.

First year Respiratory care students held a competition with posters representing Respiratory Therapy. They also hosted a “Hot Air Contest” in which male and female contestants tested their Peak Expiratory Flow Rate. Peak expiratory flow rates are a screening tool for asthmatics and a way for asthmatics to monitor their disease.

Second year students of the respiratory care program gave presentations at Parsons Middles School, Bartlett grade school, and Pittsburg grade school, middle school and high school

LCC was also the host of a Chapter 8 Kansas Respiratory Care meeting. An educational meeting was held for participating respiratory therapists to earn continuing education units needed to maintain their license. The speaker, Douglas S. Gardenhire, EdD, ©, RRT-NPS, gave a presentation on Pharmacological Updates called Aerosol Devices: Tried and True, Novel and New

Gardenhire graduated from LCC RT program in 1993. He went to work at Via Christi in Wichita, KS as a staff therapist and continued his education. From there he went to work for the University of Alabama Medical Center as a transport therapist. He came back to Parsons and was the Clinical Coordinator for Respiratory Care at LCC. While in Parsons he attended PSU and earned a Masters in Technical Teacher Education. From LCC he left for the University of Georgia where he is currently Director of Clinical Education.
