Operation Excel Names October Student of the Month

Operation Excel, a federally funded Student Support Services TRIO Grant at Labette Community College, has named Shelena Jones Student of the Month for October 2007. Since 1990 this federal grant has helped over 3,000 students meet their educational goals.

Students of the Month must maintain at least a 2.7 GPA, and use OE services such as workshops, tutoring, and counseling/transferring support. Community service is also part of the selection criteria.

Jones, a sophomore majoring in graphic design and resident of Cherryvale, will graduate next spring with dual degrees in graphic design and art. She credits the support of her close-knit family and learning to manage her time as key elements to her success in college. Jones feels the OE peer tutoring program and a spring break trip also enriched her “college experience”.

Jones also encourages everyone to get to know LCC staff and instructors. “They can be your support group and home away from home,” she said. 

She is also a member of the Graphic Design club.
