LCC Debate/Forensics Earns Place at Tournament
Labette Community College began a new concentration area for the Communications program this fall. The concentration of Forensics and Debate provides opportunities for students to participate in intercollegiate competition with students from other community colleges and universities.
LCC Forensics and Debate students gain experience through classroom work as well as the intercollegiate competitions. They also develop strong research and communication skills, critical thinking and teamwork skills, and educational connections with other students.
The newly formed Debate and Forensics team at Labette Community College traveled to Sterling on September 28, to compete in two back-to-back tournaments.
“Debates on the Plains,” the first tournament LCC has ever competed in, is a college-level forensics tournament where 17 universities were in competition.
The outcome of the tournament was great overall for LCC with the following students placing:
• Kate Walker, 4th & 5th in Persuasive speaking; 7th in Comedy Extemp
• Joel Ybarra, 3rd in Poetry Interpretation
• Chris Boeckman, 6th in Comedy Extemp; 7th in After Dinner Speaking
Placing high in these five categories, the LCC squad placed 3rd overall in the tournament. Members of the squad were Ashley Merrill, Joel Ybarra, Katie Walker, Lee Harrison, and Chris Boeckman.
“It was an awesome experience,” said Joel Ybarra, sophomore. “I had no idea how we would do in this tournament, but once we got started I felt out chances for placing were good.”
The next tournament for LCC’s debate and forensics squad will be at Tulsa Community College in October.
