Eric Comeaux of Mound Valley is a nontraditional student majoring in biology. He grew up in Tomball, Tx. and came to Kansas a few years ago. Once Comeaux got here he was inspired by LCC’s allied health programs. He originally wanted to enroll and major in radiography.
“I changed my major to biology after a semester of prerequisites for radiography,” Comeaux said. “A few teachers said to me, ‘you need to set your sights higher.’”Comeaux said he had a passion to learn about genetics and hopes to pursue a career in genetic research and development after graduating from a four-year university. He is still undecided on which university to transfer to, but has taken the college transfer opportunities with SSS to further explore his options.
Among his accomplishments, Comeaux is an executive officer in the local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year colleges. His advisor, Juliana Kepner, encouraged him to join after his first successful semester at LCC.
“Because of the regional conferences, the organization helped me meet other students in the region and I was kind of shy before that,” Comeaux said. “I’m excited about going to Seattle in the spring for the International Convention.”
Comeaux said his participation in SSS helped him with his success because of the book loan program and the free college transfer trips. His SSS advisor, Juliana Kepner, and a former science professor, Dr. Mary Scott, are significant roles in his success at LCC.
“They have been my back bone while attending Labette,” Comeaux said. “Dr. Scott really helped me with changing my major and career path, and Juliana has helped me with everything else I’ve had to deal with at the college.”
