LCC Nursing Students Gain Hands-On Experience at Trauma Conference

Parsons, KS — Nursing students at Labette Community College stepped out of normal studies and into real-world scenarios on Thursday, March 26, during a day-long Trauma Conference on the LCC Main Campus. The conference was provided by Labette Health and focused on emergency response and patient care.
Throughout the day, students heard directly from healthcare professionals who deal with trauma situations every day. Speakers shared personal experiences from the field, giving students a clearer picture of what happens in those critical moments—from the scene of an accident to care inside the hospital.
Students also had the chance to put their skills to work through hands-on practice with trauma response protocols. These exercises helped reinforce what they’ve been learning in class while giving them a better sense of the fast-paced decision-making required in emergency situations.
Professionals who participated in the conference included:
ER Doctor Dr. Neil Bryan, MD
Trauma Program Manager Misti Bond
ER Nurse Manager Becky Shipley
ER Nurse Kyla Reyes
EMS Paramedic Crissy Reed
ICU Nurse Peggy Hoisington
MedFlight Nurse Billy Foster
Inpatient Rehab Director Leslie McConnell
Trauma Surgeon, Dr. Eric Hunn MD.
Each brought a different perspective, helping students see how every role works together when responding to serious medical circumstances.
“We are so appreciative of the collaboration that Labette Health and the Labette Community College Nursing program has established. Throughout the years, Labette Health has always willingly partnered with us to provide evidence-based knowledge and clinical experiences for our students. It takes a village and what a great village we have,” said Julie Page, MSN, RN, and Kim Beachner, MSN, RN, professors for the Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing course.
Events like this are an important part of the nursing program at LCC, giving students the opportunity to learn from people currently working in the field while building confidence in their own abilities.
