Erie, KS- Stephanie Stark, Erie teacher and local Special Olympics coordinator, is hosting this year’s Special Olympics event for area residents ages 8 and up. The event is set to take place at the Erie High School track on April 30. Check-in for the teams begins at 8 a.m. with the opening ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. The sporting events will begin at 9:30 a.m. weather depending.
According to Stephanie, the Erie Special Olympics differs from other similar events. She said, “Our event is not only run by students but was also started by the students. Everyone looks forward to it. Most of our high school will be out running events on the day of the Special Olympics. It is truly an amazing day. The whole community comes together for our Special Olympics.” This will be 13 years that the Special Olympics have been held in Erie.
The inclusivity that started the Special Olympics is part of Erie high school’s culture. Stephanie mentioned that through the friendships made at the Special Olympics the athletes are now included more often on a day-to-day basis.
